Dead End or No Outlet

For many years this question has plagued my mind.  Why economically disadvantaged neighborhoods have “Dead End” signs and wealthy neighborhoods have “No Outlet” signs?

As I was coming home after a shopping trip one Sunday, I noticed that in the wealthy neighborhoods the signs were much kinder than in the low and middle-income neighborhoods.  I wonder, how does this simple sign impact a child or an individual that passes the sign each day?

I looked down the street that had a dead end sign, there were several individuals sitting outside looking forlorn and defeated.  They could see the sign from their front stoop.  If a child or individual sees that sign each day, does that take root in their spirit like an abusive tongue.  Do they feel the narrative of their life is a dead-end?  Do they feel that the contributions they make to society, don’t matter. Does this signal them to stop trying?

Sometimes it is the smallest things that can create the biggest difference.  A smile. a hug, a billboard, or a sign.  If the dead-end signs would be changed to no outlet signs, would it make a difference?  We must remember that everything that goes into the brain through our senses creates an imprint on who we are, what we think, and how we do things.  It is easy to maintain a positive imprint, but difficult to erase a scar made by something negative.

Remember that you are special, have worth, and are deserving of all the good things in life.  No matter your social standing.  You have the same opportunities as everyone else although, your road may be a little rockier.  The rocky roads provide experience and knowledge.  It creates resilience.

We are all connected so, be kind to your neighbors and yourself.  Change and healing start with one step, one random act of kindness, or one senseless act of beauty.

Always keep moving forward. If you need – Sit, Stay, Heal.  The world will be there when you return.

Take care,
